My name is Linda Newbold. I am a registered and accredited counsellor, psychotherapist and practitioner of EMDR therapy with many years’ experience in the field of personal growth and change. I am based in Surrey and can help people in the local areas as well as London, Kent and further afield.

Here, I bring together information, from various sources and my own experience in trauma therapy, about all kinds of trauma and related problems including post-traumatic stress and also information about my preferred therapeutic method of working, known as EMDR therapy, to help with these, and other, issues.

So What Is EMDR?

In this website I aim to disseminate the facts and increase awareness about this powerful EMDR psychotherapy. I feel really excited about its capacity to help others. After treatment I have witnessed huge improvement in people's capacity to experience life in a way which is so much better for them. It has undergone strict clinical trials and is an evidenced–based method for healing PTSD. Empirical experience has also shown that it’s highly effective in trauma therapy and the treatment of other issues (as noted below).

EMDR is both a methodology which can be inserted into other psychotherapeutic approaches – provided the 8-stage protocol is adhered to - and it can also be used as standalone psychotherapy for helping, not only with trauma and PTSD, but also with, amongst others, the following issues:

  • Anxiety,
  • Depression 
  • Relationship issues,
  • Abuse
  • Phobias and OCD,
  • Alcohol and drug related problems.

Can I use EMDR at home in a self-help way?

Dr Francine Shapiro, the originator of EMDR therapy has written a very useful book - particularly recommended for those who have experienced this or another therapy already - called:

“Getting Past Your Past – Taking Control of Your Life with Self-Help Techniques from EMDR Therapy” by Francine Shapiro.

What are the similarities and differences between Trauma and Post Traumatic Stress?  

In brief, although it is true that people suffering from PTSD have experienced one or many traumas, the experience of trauma does not necessarily give rise to PTSD. People, who have experienced childhood difficulties in the form of, for example, years of repeated angry criticism or have struggled with parental divorce or have experienced neglect, might be described as traumatised but would not necessarily manifest the symptoms of PTSD.

  • Trauma therefore may be defined as any deeply distressing and disturbing event or series of events which a person may experience negatively or think about and feel disturbed by. Click Here for more information
  • PTSD may be defined as an event which causes mental and emotional stress following fear for their life or severe, completely unexpected psychological shock; this typically involves sleep disturbance, repeated vivid recall of the experience and panic attacks. Click Here for more information.

What is Dissociation?

On some occasions, some people who have experienced extreme and severe trauma, particularly during childhood, suffer from this problem. It is a way of detaching from reality in order to protect oneself from emotional or physical pain. In extreme circumstances it can involve amnesia.
