My name is Linda Newbold. I hope you find what you need on my website, whether you are just looking for information or wish to arrange an assessment and possible on-going therapy.
I am an accredited EMDR psychotherapeutic counsellor based in Surrey and can help people in the local areas as well as South London, Hampshire, Kent, West Sussex and further afield using an online video platform.
Please note that EMDR sessions are carried out remotely on a secure video platform. The first one or two sessions only may be in-person at my clinic.
In this website, I bring together information from various sources about all kinds of trauma and related problems including post-traumatic stress and also information about my preferred therapeutic method of working, known as EMDR therapy, to help with these, and other, issues.
I have many years’ of experience using both EMDR therapy and other psychotherapeutic methods in the field of personal growth and change.
Your Questions Answered
So What Is EMDR? (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
In this website I aim to disseminate the facts and increase awareness about this powerful EMDR psychotherapy. I feel really excited about its capacity to help others. During my career as an EMDR therapist, I have witnessed huge improvement in people’s capacity to experience life in a way which is so much better for them. EMDR has undergone strict clinical trials and is an evidenced–based method for healing PTSD. Further empirical experience has also shown that it’s highly effective in trauma therapy generally and also in the treatment of other issues (as noted below).
EMDR is a methodology which can be inserted into other psychotherapeutic approaches provided the 8-stage protocol is adhered to. It can also be used as standalone psychotherapy provided the therapist is already a qualified mental health professional, for helping, not only with trauma and PTSD, but also with, amongst others, the following issues:
- Anxiety,
- Depression
- Relationship issues,
- Abuse and many complex childhood issues,
- Phobias and OCD,
- Alcohol and drug related problems.
Here is an article which I wrote which summarises all you need to know about treating your trauma with EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing):

If you are interested in knowing more about the origins of EMDR therapy and the research evidence behind it, please read the following useful articles, reporting Q&A sessions with Dr Francine Shapiro – the originator of EMDR. The first was published in the New York Times on 2nd March 2012 and the second was published on Psychotherapy.Net in 2014 respectively. They answer questions about EMDR and its uses in trauma therapy, and offer references to the relevant research.
How is EMDR carried out in a psychotherapy session?
Please click on the EMDR page for more detailed information about how it works.
Here is a very useful book, especially written for the layman, on how EMDR therapy works:
“The EMDR Revolution – Change Your Life One Memory at a Time” by Tal Croitoru.
It gives easy to understand information on EMDR for those interested in exploring EMDR further.
Can I use EMDR at home in a self-help way?
Dr Francine Shapiro, the originator of EMDR therapy has written a very useful book – particularly recommended for those who have experienced this or another therapy already – called:
“Getting Past Your Past – Taking Control of Your Life with Self-Help Techniques from EMDR Therapy” by Francine Shapiro.
What are the similarities and differences between Trauma and Post Traumatic Stress?
In brief, although it is true that people suffering from PTSD have experienced one or many traumas, the experience of trauma does not necessarily give rise to PTSD. People, who have experienced childhood difficulties in the form of, for example, years of repeated angry criticism or have struggled with parental divorce or have experienced abuse or neglect, might be described as traumatised but would not necessarily manifest the symptoms of PTSD.
- Trauma therefore may be defined as any deeply distressing and disturbing event or series of events which a person may experience negatively or think about and feel disturbed by. Click Here for more information
- PTSD may be defined as an event which causes mental and emotional distress following fear for their life or severe, completely unexpected psychological shock; this typically involves sleep disturbance, repeated vivid recall of the experience and panic attacks. Click Here for more information.
I have included links to real-life stories where people have experienced trauma or PTSD at the bottom of the Trauma Page.
What is Dissociation?
On some occasions, some people who have experienced extreme and severe trauma, particularly during childhood, suffer from this problem. It is a way of detaching from reality in order to protect oneself from emotional or physical pain. In extreme circumstances it can involve amnesia.

About Linda
I have qualifications in various treatment types which I can offer you and which may be used individually or in conjunction with one another. I can and do offer other forms of psychotherapy if EMDR therapy is not your preferred method. Please see my other website for more information by following this link:
It is important for you to find a mental health specialist you can trust. My approach includes tailoring a treatment programme based on your individual needs and requirements following a detailed assessment. In any psychotherapeutic method, I will offer you space in the strictest confidence for exploring your inner world and for making changes in both your inner and outer one. By providing you with the highest clinical standards of care, combined with 35 years of experience in the personal growth and change field I am able to offer you a large number of powerful creative tools, from a wide range of sources, to enable you to improve the quality of your life.
Whilst my expertise is in working with trauma and its body-mind manifestation, I work with most disturbing issues which you may like to explore, re-evaluate and change. Where appropriate, my preferred method for working with you is by using EMDR which I have found to be an extraordinarily powerful process and exceptionally effective in alleviating many issues I’ve come across most of the time. In other words, EMDR is not only for extreme or life-threatening traumas or PTSD. It’s probably fair to say that most issues you find disturbing are traumatic to you personally (although they may not be to another) and in those cases EMDR can be applied very well.
My services are available to those based in Surrey including Redhill, Leatherhead, Epsom and Guildford, as well as South London, Hampshire and West Sussex, and I can also offer services much further afield using a secure video platform.
If you would like to find out more about my services, please get in touch by calling 01737 843047 or 07881 801701. I offer a free 15-minute discussion to answer any queries you may have.
